ATTRACTIVE RAINWATER COLLECTION ALTERNATIVES
Maintaining your garden in the middle of August may be an impossible task, especially here in Texas. Want to be green in keeping your garden green but dont like the idea of unsightly plastic barrel rainwater collector cisterns? Try these attractive alternatives ...
Rainwater Hog's modular design installs just about anywhere. It runs about $450 for a 47 gallon tank (approx. $9.57/g) or $1960 for 6 units (approx. $6.95/g) and can come in bronze olive green, red, orange, black, white, and lime green.

Waterwall can make an attractive wall in itself or sculptural garden piece. The Fatboy tank is a 650g system that comes in autumn brown, brick red, cream, or deep green and will run you $1,189.99 (approx. $1.83/g).

While not as attractive but still a practicle alternative that can be hidden anywhere, the Rainwater Pillow offers collection systems ranging from 1000g at $2,500 to 40,000g at $16,243 (both at approx $2.50/g).

RAMMED EARTH IN AUSTIN
It has been estimated that 30% of the world’s population uses earth as a building material, according to the "all-knowing" Wikipedia. So why is the U.S. and Austin, our #6 ranked Smart City, so resistant to rammed earth?
Rammed earth construction is not just for homes adapting to arid climates. Although you may not get the full thermal mass benefits that earth walls have to offer in arid climates of extreme day/night temperature changes, rammed earth is still a very cost effective, durable, attractive, and green option for Austinites. read more at Austin Green Building Examiner ...
